Pulling out the Plums: Using Research in Fiction

It’s easy to fall down rabbit holes when you’re researching for historical accuracy or just atmosphere. This workshop will show you how to climb out, and what to take with you. We’ll focus on what detail to use and where to put it. Structure, setting, and voice will all benefit, whether you’re writing about past, present, or future.

Karen Hofmann is the author of two novels: After Alice, published by NeWest Press in 2014, and What is Going to Happen Next, published in 2017.  A collection of poetry, Water Strider, was published by Frontenac House in 2008 and shortlisted for the Dorothy Livesay prize.  A collection of short stories will be published by NeWest in 2019.  Karen has published fiction and poetry in several literary magazines, including The Malahat Review, Prairie Fire, and Chatelaine, and has won the Okanagan Short Fiction contest three times.   Karen teaches literature, composition, and creative writing at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia.  Her writing explores relationships, especially of family, and the landscapes of the BC Interior.

Writing from the Edge

Observational and personal narratives focusing on maximizing work in minimalist way, writing daily, writing from energetic prompts, from fears, from dreams, from observations, from memories, from life and living it!! Learning the right tools, techniques to develop new exciting work in poetry, non-fiction and fiction, as well as adding humour to lighten up the darkness. The strongest punch is the truth, writing what you know and ways to do it to expand your career, your craft and your mind. It all starts here, round one in the boxing ring of life.

(We may go for a 15 minute walk during a break to get fresh air and observe and find inspiration! Dress for the weather and bring change for coffee or tea somewhere!)
